Why citizen science
The world is facing a biodiversity crisis; we can no longer afford to invest in ineffective conservation strategies.
Optimising these strategies requires data - a lot of it - and this is complicated to collect using traditional biodiversity monitoring methods; while scientifically valuable, they are often limited by cost, geographic coverage, and the availability of specialist expertise.
Borneo Futures is developing a new generation of biodiversity monitoring solutions that combine community participation, digital technology, and scientific innovation.

Borneo Futures in Brunei is one of the first to provide real-time updates on wildlife status in tropical forests, which is essential for outcome-based conservation.
Monitoring at scale
Between April 2025 and September 2026, around 950 unique observers from nine remote villages in Indonesian Borneo collected over 330,000 verified wildlife observations. We compensated them for their contributions after verifying the data.
This extensive dataset is sufficient to generate statiscally robust estimates of wildlife abundance.
Our work with the private sector has also seen great results with over 250,000 verified observations collected between 2019-2026

CAPAI
CAPAI is a mobile application and citizen-science ecosystem that enables local communities to document biodiversity using smartphones. Designed with simplicity and an offline-first approach, CAPAI allows anyone—regardless of experience or connectivity—to record wildlife observations in the field.
Observations are submitted for expert verification, turning large-scale community-generated data into reliable biodiversity information. Building on the experience of PENDAKI and KehatiKu, CAPAI provides a scalable platform for community-based biodiversity monitoring across Indonesian Borneo.
Using Non-Standard Users
Occupancy Modelling
Our wildlife index combines occupancy data for eight species is weighted according to the IUCN Red List, CITES listings, protection status in Indonesia, and species range.
Our citizen science programme, KehatiKu, provieds an alternative approach that works with the communities who live alongside orangutans and other wildlife.
Oppurtunistic encounters are recorded as observations on our mobile phone app, feeding into a growing database of occupancy metrics. Within less than 8 months of programme initiation, we are already able to develop statistical analyses of occupancy.
