Darmawan Liswanto is an expert advisor to Borneo Futures with more than 35 years of experience in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management across Indonesia. His expertise spans protected area management, species conservation, forest governance, environmental policy, and wildlife law enforcement, with a particular focus on integrating conservation into production landscapes.

Throughout his career, Darmawan has worked across government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector, and international development programmes, holding senior technical and leadership roles with organisations including Fauna & Flora International (FFI), USAID, WWF, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and Gaia Daya Buana Consulting. He has also founded several Indonesian conservation organisations dedicated to biodiversity conservation, environmental governance, conservation policy, law enforcement, and research.

Since 2007, Darmawan has been a leading advocate for Public–Private–People partnerships, promoting collaborative approaches that strengthen biodiversity conservation on the ground. He has played a key role in advancing High Conservation Value (HCV) approaches within Indonesia’s oil palm sector, helping to develop practical guidance for integrating biodiversity conservation into plantation management and supporting the implementation of sustainable production standards.

In addition to his advisory work, Darmawan serves on the Executive Board of Community Forest Ecosystem Services (CFES), and a number of other conservation organizations, where he supports initiatives that strengthen community-led natural resource management and create mechanisms for indigenous peoples and local communities to benefit from ecosystem services.
