Expertise

Darmawan Liswanto has over 35 years’ experience working in Indonesia on nature conservation, specifically protected area management, species conservation, forest governance and law enforcement. He has founded several national NGOs that focus on Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Governance, Conservation Policy and law enforcement, and research on Biodiversity and anthropology.

Currently, Darmawan acts as a member of the Chief Executive Board of Community Forest Ecosystem Services (CFES), a non-profit NGO strengthening the role of communities in managing natural resources and channeling payment for ecosystem services to indigenous people and local community.

Darmawan has significant experience in stakeholder engagement in both conservation and sustainable agribusiness settings. Around this, he has worked extensively with forest policy, social empowerment, law enforcement and governance.

It is this experience that placed Darmawan as a valued advisor for Borneo Futures’ citizen science programme, KehatiKu. Having a nuanced and deep understanding of local context, effective engagement strategies, and common challenges, allows him to support the day-to-day functioning of our programme and advise on how to address any issues that may arise.
