Expertise

Marc Ancrenaz is an associate and co-founder of Borneo Futures. He has over 30 years of conservation experience in Southeast Asia, with a focus on East Malaysia. He co-founded Hutan, a grassroots research and conservation organisation in the Kinabatangan floodplain of Eastern Sabah, in 1998, and is an active researcher in the field.

His background lies in veterinary medicine, which he later applied to a PhD in primatology. He is passionate about driving positive conservation change through community involvement, policy change, and encouraging societal awareness of conservation issues. It is these facets of conservation science that he focuses on when in the field. He also regularly attends international conferences to share his insights from community-based conservation programmes.

Over the years, Marc has contributed valuable thinking to the development of Borneo Futures’ strategies and methods, and he remains an important collaborator.
